Vitamin D3 Supplementation

Not all supplements are created equal. When you are deciding on which vitamin D supplement to take, it is wise to keep a few points in mind to ensure that you are taking the best supplement.

Things to look for when choosing a vitamin D supplement:

  • Fast absorption: Faster absorption means reaching healthy levels faster.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Correcting a vitamin D deficiency does not have to be costly.
  • Liquid dosage form: Highly concentrated liquids means just a few drops is all you need.
A liquid dosage form is also great for the elderly, children and others who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.
  • Pleasant taste: Liquid formulations can be a treat for the taste buds, too!

The Children's Hospital at Westmead, NSW, is currently undertaking two clinical trials using BioCeuticals® 333.3IU/drop cholecalciferol oral emulsion as a vitamin D supplement and is trialling a 1000IU/mL vitamin D3 (now available commercially) and a higher strength 50 000IU/mL liquid.

According to pharmacists Pathma Joseph and Violet Hemmens involved in the hospital research, “Commercially available oral liquid preparations of cholecalciferol have long stability, are cost-effective and will be more effective in replenishing vitamin D levels.”

They add, "Pleasant-tasting, commercially available, higher-strength, liquid vitamin D3 preparations have the advantages of easier access, improved compliance, and greater patient acceptability, and are possibly the solution to the global need for effective treatment options for vitamin D deficiency."
