The main source of vitamin D for Australians is sun exposure.[2] Practising safe sun exposure can help you maintain healthy vitamin D levels.
Getting vitamin D from your diet can also supplement the amount of vitamin D you produce from sunlight. Some foods contain more vitamin D than others; therefore eating these foods on a regular basis can add to the amount of vitamin D you naturally produce in the skin from sun exposure.
Keep in mind that vitamin D is present in only small amounts in foods. To obtain adequate vitamin D levels, it is advisable to combine sun exposure with dietary intake of vitamin D3.[2]
If you are unable to maintain adequate vitamin D levels from sun exposure and/or dietary intake, it may be in your best interest to take a vitamin D supplement. For more information, seek advice from a qualified health professional.
